Superior laryngeal nerve block technique. After identification of key landmarks (the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage), a 25-gauge needle is inserted from the lateral aspect of the neck, aiming toward the greater cornu of the hyoid bone. If it is difficult to identify the hyoid bone, the needle can be aimed at the superior cornu of the thyroid cartilage. Once contact is achieved, injection with 2 mL of 2% lidocaine will block the superior laryngeal nerve.
